To the “conservative” mind, the safety of decent, law abiding citizens ought to be the preeminent responsibility of the government of any liberal Democracy. But to those of the “compassionate” Left, a good many of the criminals within our societies are the victims of social injustices which more or less exonerate them of their crimes, however violent. Billionaire George Soros has generously financed the appointment of several “liberal” District Attorneys across the U.S. given to releasing violent criminals back into society on the basis of this assumption. The horrific results of this policy are an irrefutable reality which the mainstream media more or less refuses to acknowledge, constantly invoking the availability of guns as the key to the problem while ignoring the moral degeneracy of those who use them to slaughter the innocent.
Cleotha Abston-Henderson, as my last blog indicated, was arrested 16 times as a juvenile between 1995 and 2000, the rape of a man being among the charges brought against him. His compulsive criminality was interrupted only because he was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the kidnapping/robbery of a lawyer in the year 2000. His early release in Nov. 2020 cost Eliza Fletcher her life.
On Wed., Sept 7, Ezekiel Kelly, another Black man, went on a random shooting spree in Memphis which ultimately led to the deaths of four perfectly innocent people. Sentenced to 3 years imprisonment in April of 2021 for a pair of shootings in the previous year, he was released this past March after serving less than a year. Those who released him are quite literally responsible for Wednesday’s carnage!
On Thurs., Sept 8, in the California town of San Carlos, a 27 year old mother of 2, Karina Castro, was beheaded in broad daylight by her ex-boyfriend who, due to his history of domestic violence, was issued a restraining order in April. The victim’s grandmother revealed that the killer was a diagnosed schizophrenic. Gee, surprising isn’t it, that a schizophrenic who had repeatedly beaten his girlfriend would brazenly disregard a restraining order. Imagine the horror of Ms. Castro’s life over the last 5 months knowing this monster could strike at any moment! Ought not her welfare/peace of mind to have been the overwhelming concern of the local authorities? Because it was not, her kids will forever be without a mother.
Each of the above involves an individual who had repeatedly engaged in violence towards others. To me it is simple common sense that such individuals need to be denied their freedom until unequivocally reformed. If that involves an overhaul of our legal priorities, so be it. The welfare of the law abiding public ought to be the foremost concern of any sane legislator. Not to be outdone by our neighbors to the South, Canada’s “progressive” approach to the Law was recently put on tragic/comic display in the province of Saskatchewan.
On Sunday, Sept.4, brothers Myles and Damien Sanderson went on a killing spree in and around the James Smith Cree Nation, stabbing 10 people to death and leaving 18 others wounded. Apparently it’s not just guns that kill! Both brothers had criminal records but that Myles was still roaming free suggests Canada’s legal system to have evolved well beyond mere dysfunction into the realm of insanity!
Myles Sanderson had been charged with 59 criminal offenses over the course of his life, many of them violent in nature! Cited for domestic abuse 5 times since 2011, he had attempted to kill one of his in-laws in 2015. Imprisoned for trying to stab two members of the Cree Nation in 2018, he came before his parole board in Feb. of 2022 and was granted an early release by one Betty Ann Pottruff who declared that his freedom would facilitate his rehabilitation. Yet other literature published by that board suggested both that his record was “very concerning” and that he had often been “deceitful” in his dealings with the authorities. Gee, is it possible a lifelong degenerate might lie in order to escape imprisonment? More concerning, is it possible that an official of the Canadian judiciary might be so naive as to believe his lies? Ms. Pottruff apparently did and as a result the population of Saskatchewan was reduced by 10 on Sept. 4.
As one who has never raised a fist to another human being, as one who feels bad about ending the life of an ant, I am outraged with both the perpetrators of the barbaric crimes cited above and the intellectual/moral anemia of those who allowed them to happen. For Humanists [“conservatives”], simple decency is a value a billion times more precious than the highly questionable Determinism which the Neo-Marxist Left invokes as the source of all human behavior. Predictably, my local newspaper, The Hamilton Spectator, published an opinion piece on Sept. 8 with the headline: Mass killing has roots in inequity.
The article directed no outrage whatsoever at the Sanderson brothers or those “compassionate” officials who, seemingly blind to their moral degeneracy, had repeatedly granted them their freedom. Rather it was the failure of the Canadian government, and by implication the White, Western Patriarchy, to rescue the Indigenous from their often squalid living conditions that was to blame. I am hardly one to deny the inefficiency/indifference plaguing many government programs, but there is no excusing the disgusting acts of cruelty cited above. Hundreds of millions of people across the planet are burdened with one sort of duress or another but would never consider resorting to such acts. It’s called human decency and used to go by the name “morality.”
Twenty-five hundred years ago Socrates declared Morality to be absolutely contingent upon Self-Awareness. But how self-aware are the “progressives” within America who chose to make a career criminal, George Floyd, into a cultural icon? How self-aware are those who weep for the likes of Eliza Fletcher and Karina Castro, even as they support the lax legal system that led to their deaths. How self-aware is George Soros whose D.A.s have helped turn California into a third world dystopia? How self-aware is Kamala Harris who recently declared the Mexican-American border to be secure, though irrefutable facts suggest otherwise?
I honestly don’t know if the Leftist dementia that has come to dominate our culture is the product of sheer stupidity or brazen hypocrisy. What I do know is that all rational “conservatives” need to stand up for their Principles which, by focusing on each Man’s responsibilities as a Moral Being, are, without a doubt, infinitely more relevant to the Human Condition than the absurd Neo-Marxist generalizations about various demographics that dominate the Left……i.e., all Men are this, all Women are that, all Cops are this, all people of Color are that, blah, blah, blah, blah.
