Just after Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral victory, my local newspaper, The Hamilton Spectator, published a piece by Anne Bokma entitled “Could Our Daughters lose the right to vote?” Bokma is an author and journalist who has been published in the much revered Toronto Star, which in fact owns the Spectator. She is, in other words, not some far Left radical but rather a mainstream “progressive.” Yet her loathing for Trump led her to assert the following: ” Gay marriage could be dismantled. Some believe interracial marriage will come under scrutiny. And maybe a woman’s right to vote.”
I understand that Mr. Trump often bluffs his way to success by threatening the most punitive of policies from which he inevitably retreats. While I do not particularly admire this tactic, it is obvious that he has never actively supported any significant assault on the rights of Women, Gays or Blacks. Should he do so, mainstream “conservatives” would respond with outrage, and it is not unreasonable to suggest he would be impeached within a matter of weeks! The wonderful Candace Owens, Dave Rubin, Larry Elder, Megyn Kelly, etc., etc., would not tolerate for a moment any Trump assault on the legitimate Rights of the aforementioned Demographics. At the same time, of course, they would be supported by America’s highly evolved Judiciary and Constitutional statutes which would also put a stop to such atrocities.
My point is that the suggestion that Donald Trump might put an end to a Woman’s right to vote, is absurd. But even more absurd is the fact that the person posing this possibility is not some Leftist fanatic, but rather a journalist deemed worthy of publication in the Toronto Star, one if this country’s foremost “liberal” platforms. So while the Left tries to demonize “conservatism” by citing fanatics who in no way represent its Rational, Mainstream perspective, the Mainstream Left is in fact significantly Irrational!
