In a May 29 video, Lebanese-American conservative Brigitte Gabrielle cited the impact of the policies of N.Y. city’s Socialist Mayor and the state’s Democratic Governor on the economic well-being of those who elected them. Between 2022-24, she says, 892 companies abandoned the city, taking with them approximately 47 billion dollars in taxable income. In a single quarter alone, apparently, 5000 or so businesses decided to move elsewhere. This same pattern has been reflected in the decision of a host of middle-class families to seek a better life in other States.
Zohran Mamdani, Mayor of N.Y. C. since January of this year, has done nothing bur exacerbate this trend, according to Ms. Gabrielle. Her claim that he espouses Socialism rather than Democracy is certainly not the rant of some radical conservative, inasmuch as even the Left-leaning Bill Maher has declared him to be a Communist! As such, Mamdani espouses higher taxes and greater regulatory control over the economic domain, each a product of his contempt for Free Enterprise and indeed Capitalism itself. His politics, in other words, entail a rejection of one of the fundamental principles upon which America was founded.
No one is suggesting the laws of Supply and Demand cannot be manipulated by greedy bastards amongst our Capitalist elites. But Leftist governments which try to purge their economies of such abuse by restricting the freedoms and confiscating the profits of all those seeking to improve their lives through their ingenuity and hard work, must inevitably incite the latter to flee to greener pastures. Hence, Ms. Gabrielle suggests, the flourishing economies of States such as Texas, Florida and North Carolina, each of which has prospered due to the influx of businesses seeking to escape the tyranny of “progressive” N.Y.! While North Carolina is governed by a Democrat, Florida and Texas are run by Republicans and the surge in the availability of jobs within both is apparently amazing. At the same time, N.Y. now rates 49th of all states in terms of its economic performance.
As our species is far from perfect, the freedoms engendered in Capitalism are bound to lead to abuses. But as we are also blessed with intelligence, ingenuity and a moral conscience, those freedoms can and have been used by Western Democracies to create the most truly Progressive Civilization in all of history. The attempt by the Left to demonize every aspect of Western Achievement as merely a matter of oppression, is truly absurd. Mamdani’s effort to impose his arbitrary definition of social justice on the citizens of his state is equally so, as their reaction would clearly seem to indicate! That their hard work might lead to a level of affluence utterly beyond that of others is in no way evidence of Social Injustice, but a simple result of the obvious, inarguable diversity of our species!
