In a video posted by Townhall on August 8, supposed liberal Bill Maher rants once more against the insanity of the contemporary Left. Geno Segers, an actor apparently slated to star in an upcoming Broadway production, was recently fired for a past tweet concerning Trans Rights in which he said the following: “I’m not against anyone living out their lives the way they want, but I’m against their rights superseding the rights of other people!” This was not hate speech, implies Maher, but simple common sense. When he points out that in certain parts of America one must “conform exactly, and I mean exactly to the one true opinion,” he is clearly referring to realms ruled by those on the Left for whom Free Speech is no longer a defensible Democratic Value! “This cannot go on.” he insists.
Maher’s refusal to admit that his Liberal views coincide almost exactly to the Rational Humanist views of today’s Conservatives, may perhaps be motivated by his reluctance to align himself with the likes of Donald Trump. This is perfectly understandable. Just as the Cancel Culture of the Left violates that Dialectical Process which the Philosophers of the Enlightenment saw as essential to true Human Progress, so Trump’s bullying manner is hardly likely to lead to a productive exchange of ideas with his adversaries! If, as McLuhan says, The Medium is The Message, then Trump is a dictatorial jerk. The truth is, however, that the Medium does not in fact define the Message, and most of Trump’s goals make infinitely more sense than those of the mainstream Left. This is hardly meant to be a glowing tribute to him and one can only hope the next Republican presidential candidate is able to articulate his conservative views with both greater clarity and civility. Perhaps at that point Mr. Maher will come to realize that his Liberalism in fact aligns almost exactly with contemporary Conservatism.
