Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer has vilified fellow Democrats Manchin and Sinema for failing to support their party’s efforts to alter the protocols of filibuster. As the Democrats do not have the 60 votes necessary to bypass those protocols, Republican Senators have been able to thwart key pieces of legislation such as Biden’s Build Back Better bill and his attempt to alter voting laws throughout the country. Obama, not atypically, ascribes Republicans’ opposition to these pieces of legislation as racially motivated. Schumer argues their use of filibuster is an affront to the Democratic Process itself.
But wait! In 2005, when the shoe was on the other foot, when the filibuster suited Schumer’s political agenda, he declared, as reported by The Daily Wire a couple of days ago, that weakening or abandoning it would “be a doomsday for democracy.”
No doubt there are hypocrites among the ranks of the Republicans as well. But examples of such hypocrisy in those on the Left are a daily occurrence. If the constitutionally mandated processes of their Democracy do not suit their purposes, they sanctimoniously seek to have them abolished even as they continue to chant, without really going into detail, that Donald Trump Is The Greatest Living Threat To Democracy Itself.
