On Nov. 22 of last year, 23 year old Thai model and aspiring fashion designer Bew Jirajariyawetch was brutally beaten and robbed in a N.Y.C. subway station. The event was captured on video. On Thurs., Feb 10 of this year, her assailant was arrested. He is 40 year old Black man Kevin Douglas of Queens who, absurdly, has been arrested 44 times yet was still prowling the city’s streets in search of prey. Gee, are you surprised that subway crime in the city is up 74% over the same period last year?
It is simple common sense that the safety of its citizens, the maintenance of law and order, ought to be the primary responsibility of any democratically elected government. While I find many of the social equity initiatives of “progressives” naive, impracticable and morally offensive, at the very least they ought to take a back seat to this fundamental obligation. But common sense is afforded little respect in the minds of the inclusive “woke.”
Bail “reforms” in states such as N.Y. are lauded by their “liberal” proponents both because they save millions of dollars in prison expenses and because they reduce the inordinate number of the “oppressed” under-classes incarcerated there. A common sense approach to Justice, of course, would suggest that if an inordinate percentage of any one group is responsible for criminal activity, then that same percentage ought to face the consequences. At the same time if financing prisons, mental institutions and drug rehab programs is likely to enhance the safety of the law abiding, tax paying public, ought it not to take precedence over the billions of dollars spent by “progressive” governments on programs of demonstrably dubious merit?
For example: Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services has just decided to give 30 million dollars to various organizations intent on providing “safe smoking kits” to hardened drug addicts. The logic behind such programs would seem to be that if they’re going to smoke crack anyway, why not let them do it safely. In keeping with Biden’s commitment to “advancing racial equity,” preference will be given to those initiatives operating in predominantly Black communities.
How stupid does one have to be not to realize that such expenditures tacitly exonerate if not encourage criminal behavior? New York’s recently elected Mayor Eric Adams has admitted he doesn’t feel safe using his city’s subway system. A retired cop no doubt familiar with the ravages of crime, he is nevertheless a Democrat, a member of the party responsible for releasing despicable human beings such as Kevin Douglas over and over again. Pardon my “judgmental” attitude, but to the “conservative” mind, sympathy for those such as he at the expense of the welfare of the dozens of innocent victims he might have abused over the years, seems like a form of insanity. No doubt Mayor Adams, who purports to be a devotee of Law and Order, must be questioning the rationale of his political affiliation.
I won’t go on at length about it but how truly sad was the death of another Oriental woman, Michelle Go, who was pushed in front of an oncoming subway train in an unprovoked attack on Jan 15 by Black man Simon Martial who also had a criminal record while, according to his sister, being repeatedly in and out of mental institutions over the last 20 years. Spewing gibberish as he was taken into custody by the N.Y. police, he claimed he was entitled to kill Michelle because he was in fact God!
Examples of such needless deaths are too numerous to cite, the salient fact that in many cases sensible judicial protocols might have prevented them, simply ignored by the mainstream media. Most of the U.S. cities [i.e., N.Y., Chicago, San Fransisco, Portland, Detroit, etc.] in which crime is out of control are under the jurisdiction of Democratic Governors and Mayors. This is an irrefutable fact, as is the abject failure of their “generous” treatment of those sectors of the population most likely to offend. The ultimate expression of the sentimental dementia infecting the American Left was its 2020 effort to have police forces across the country “de-funded,” an initiative many jurisdictions quickly came to regret and have since reversed. To the common sense “conservative” it was doomed to failure from the very outset.
The Left talks of compassion. My compassion is with the Go family who will spend the rest of their lives without their beautiful daughter. My Compassion is with the family of Brenda Ware whose body was found by a B.C. highway in May of 2021, having been dumped there by her “boyfriend” Philip Toner just weeks after his release from a 5 year prison sentence for viciously raping a 15 year old girl. His violent behavior even while behind bars convinced his parole board that he was extremely dangerous but Canadian Law did not grant it the discretionary power to keep him locked up. And so Brenda is dead.
One is entitled to wonder if those thousands of drug addicts, shop lifters and violent criminals benefiting from California’s “progressive” legal policies were to gather outside whatever Ivory Tower Gov. Gavin Newsom happens to occupy, how he might re-assess his compassion for the “disenfranchised”? In theory “progressives” are preeminently concerned with the plight of the “common man,” but in Fact they heartlessly abandon the law abiding members of that sector, however ill-defined, to the least evolved among us, smugly proud of their Neo-Marxist compassion for the “oppressed” while almost always financially “privileged” enough to escape the repercussions of their idiotic policies.
