The Federation for American Immigration Reform recently announced that approximately 5.5 million illegal immigrants have entered the U.S. since Biden took office. While 4.4 million were processed by border patrol, 1.1million entered the country utterly undetected. Quite aside from the fact that many of the latter were drug dealers and various other species of undesirables, their very presence in the States suggests a country in decline, a country no longer given to the Rule of Law and Due Process, to the concept of the Nation State as a construct primarily designed to answer to the needs of its own citizens. No, to those on the “woke” Left, Compassion preempts Pragmatism, however devastating the results of this abandonment of simple common sense.
Dealing with the influx of those millions seeking to escape the turmoil of their homelands is apparently costing American taxpayers 20 billion dollars annually. The burdens placed not only on states such as Texas and Arizona but on the various others to which the newcomers have been dispatched, is a matter of fact. Was not the outrage of the wealthy denizens of Martha’s Vineyard when confronted by a few dozen of the immigrants, typical of the hypocrisy of Washington’s political elites quite certain that the results of their “compassion” are not likely to end up on their doorstep?
America is already incapable of supplying adequate housing, health care, education, law enforcement, etc., to millions of its citizens. Reason would suggest one of its government’s primary obligation ought to be to serve them. But Leftist Globalism is not rational. The border policy presently pursued by the U.S. federal government implicitly represents an open invitation to the oppressed from around the world to crash its borders in search of a better life? It is of course based upon the notion that we are one extended family obligated to love and care for each other as best we can. It is a noble sentiment to which no decent person would object. But it is both utterly impracticable while also ignoring obvious cultural/ideological differences that make us something other than one compatible, extended family.
As I have mentioned in various blogs, much recent “progressive” literature suggests that Empathy rather than Reason ought to be the guiding light of any civilized society. In “Voltaire’s Bastards” John Ralston Saul spends an entire chapter deriding the heartless logic of Capitalism. But Reason and Feeling are not mutually exclusive. Indeed policies designed to help the helpless which do not rationally acknowledge the real-world facts confronting them are doomed to failure. Such are the immigration policies of the Biden government which can neither accommodate the millions who have invaded the country over the last two years nor defend those decent, tax paying citizens whose lives may very well be compromised by their presence. The so-called sanctuary cities of states such as California, which is of course run by a Democrat, are rife with homeless encampments, drug abuse and widespread criminality. Who in their right mind would dare deny that the arrival of thousands of new immigrants desperate for a home and a job while perhaps unable to speak English, might seriously exacerbate these problems?
While the Left relentlessly exploits the narrative that the Right is dominated by racists, misogynists, homophobes, etc., the Ethos defended here is unapologetically Rational. This in no way entails disdain for any sector of the species but simply recognizes that chaos is never productive, that acting within protocols designed to produce optimum results is the only way to proceed. A nation that loses control of its borders, however welcoming to migrants from abroad, is a nation doomed to decline, a nation for whom the Rule of Law has become a mere anachronism. It is no coincidence that a significant percent of law abiding Latinos who entered America through the proper channels have now swung over to the Republicans, as the very norms which drew them to the U.S. in the first place seem to be under attack. This is all, of course, courtesy of the Woke Left which has ridiculously made Sentiment rather than Reason the driving force of its agenda.
