The Canadian Liberal Government’s Bill C-5, as stated in one of its releases, was designed to make changes to our criminal code in response to “the evidence of the disproportionate representation of Indigenous peoples, as well as Black Canadians and members of marginalized communities, both as offenders and victims.” It entails the elimination of the mandatory minimum sentences established by the Harper government for a variety of violent crimes involving the use of fire arms. Inasmuch as those sentences have been invoked against an inordinate number of those belonging to the demographics cited above, the Bill is seen as a response to “systemic racism.”
At the same time the Trudeau government has done its best to seriously limit the rights of legal gun owners, those who have never committed a violent crime in their life. Aside from the 1500 models of popular fire arms banished a couple of years ago, a number of restrictions have been placed on citizens’ ability to both buy and dispose of their legally purchased weapons. Trudeau has referred to this as “a national freeze on handgun ownership.”
No sensible person would object to any measure designed to keep guns out of the hands of those who have shown a propensity for violent criminal behavior. Ironically, of course, the latter are by definition the most prone to disregard all such measures, to simply ignore the law in the pursuit of their vile ends. Is it not absurd that one of the mandatory sentences abolished by C-5 was for those with a criminal past caught in illegal possession of a fire arm? Trudeau has literally made it easier for armed, convicted criminals to return to our streets while making it more difficult for law abiding citizens to defend themselves!
This dementia is of course rampant in the States as well where the inordinately high percentage of crime committed by urban Blacks is also explained as a matter of systemic racism, cops, apparently, arresting Blacks simply because of the color of their skin! There’s little evidence that this is true just as there is little evidence that innocent Indigenous people here in Canada are being arrested simply because of who they are. But Facts have little impact on those in the throes of Unreason, those convinced that individuals flagrantly caught in the commission of violent crimes are actually victims in no way responsible for their actions. For “progressives,” up is down and black is white, Indigenous males caught raping Indigenous females apparently doing so because of Western Colonialism. Such is the narrative relentlessly pursued by the Left, a narrative which, by denigrating the very notion of personal responsibility, by implying we are all the helpless products of our environment, calls into question its very own integrity. Submitting to moral/intellectual relativism quite literally makes all human discourse, political and otherwise, futile!
We are not just another animal. Horrific acts of cruelty ought not to be forgiven simply because of the History or Identity of their perpetrators. Whereas “conservatives” see all Men as Moral Beings responsible for their actions, “liberals” tend to either make excuses for the criminal elements in society or to simply ignore their criminality. Hence the suggestion that statistics indicating the inordinate levels of crime among Blacks in the States and the Indigenous in Canada are bogus, though the facts clearly suggest otherwise. Hence policies such as those pursued by the Trudeau government which conveniently accommodates its “liberal” aversion for making moral judgements by subscribing to the ludicrously superficial notion that it is not People but Guns that kill other people.
Nothing better illustrates the moral nullity of the political Left than its elevation of George Floyd to the status of saintly martyr. Celebrated by the mainstream press as one who had finally, courageously, got his life together, he was in fact utterly impaired by fentanyl on the day of his death. Such are the lies that have come to dominate our culture! Such is the dementia of “progressivism” which literally asks us to disregard Morality in assessing the human scene!
