Is Hypocrisy a Soporific?

How, I ask myself, do they sleep at night, those who brazenly distort the facts to suit their political bias?

On Oct.4, in the aftermath of the debate between vice-presidential candidates J.D. Vance and Tim Walz, The Hamilton Spectator published an opinion piece by Vinay Menon, a writer with the fanatically Leftist Toronto Star, who gives us his reaction to the debate 3 days earlier.

Most commentators, Menon says, seem to feel that Vance won the debate. He was articulate, reasonable and courteous while Walz was nervous and had difficulty expressing himself, frequently stumbling over his words. And yet, Menon says in one succinct sentence: “if you strip out the style, delivery and courtesy, it’s not clear Vance “won.”

Vance’s ability to express himself is deemed not to be impressive, but merely “slick.” Indeed American voters without college degrees, Menon suggests, might find Walz, “the avuncular plain-talker who goes hunting and coaches football, to be far more reliable. Deep down, they know Vance is one of the elites they despise.” The irony here, of course, is that the Left is spearheaded by a Neo-Marxist, pseudo-intellectual Elite which never ceases to demonize “populism,” while contemporary “conservatism” in fact champions the rights of the “common man.” But even more absurd than the notion that the high quality of Vance’s articulations may have alienated millions of U.S. voters, is Menon’s assertion that they were nothing more than manifestations of his hypocrisy. Clearly having approached the debate convinced that Vance is a despicable individual, he suggests scornfully: “He did a good job impersonating a sensible human. I’m surprised he didn’t show up dressed like Mr. Rogers.”

Obviously, nothing Vance could have said or done during the debate was going to yield a positive review from Menon. Interestingly, in exemplifying Vance’s hypocrisy, he cites the fact that he had previously referred to Donald Trump as “America’s Hitler.” The implication is that he has simply changed his tune in the hope of becoming the next Vice President.. But, Mr. Menon, even many former Democrats have said they will now vote Republican given the true absurdity and incompetence of the Biden administration. This is no doubt why Kamala Harris is equivocating on policies which she apparently supported 100 per cent six months ago. My point is that Vance’s change of heart may be a matter of simple common sense rather than hypocrisy. That is not, however, a conclusion the utterly biased Menon is willing to even consider.

Let us imagine for an instant a debate in which Tim Walz had expressed himself eloquently and with courtesy while J.D Vance had expressed himself like a simpleton. Menon would no doubt have celebrated the former while suggesting his rival to be utterly unworthy of political office. His “opinion piece,” that is to say, was a ludicrous exercise in political bias which had very little to do with Objective Reality. So also, sadly, is much of what is being spewed today by the political Left.
