It’s but a minor story but it is symptomatic of the irrational cultural climate induced here in the West by our “progressive” elites. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston recently expressed his outrage that his provincial judges had just issued an order forbidding all those employed within the judicial system from wearing poppies to work in honour of Remembrance Day. The rationale behind the order was that the poppies entailed a “political” statement! Houston’s view was that they simply celebrated the unequivocal heroism of those thousands from Western Europe and North America who had given their lives in eradicating the cancer of Nazism!
Why, one might ask, would the members of an an establishment institution declare the celebration of Remembrance Day a political statement, the implication being that it might offend some people? The answer clearly lies in the Cultural Climate produced by the contemporary Left, a climate rife with the notion that no aspect of the history of our Western Democracies is entirely untainted, indeed that only a “conservative” might deem it so. But however one might feel about the West’s participation in certain wars, [i.e., the Vietnam War], surely those who lost loved ones who gave their lives in defence of our Western Values [South Vietnam was under attack by Communist forces], have every right to honour their memories. The notion that donning a Poppy in their honour is in any way controversial, is simply another example of the Left’s assault on the Civilization which, for all of its flaws, is, in its ever-evolving dynamic, clearly the most Civilized in all of human history!
