Kamala and the Press: Theater of the Absurd!

Should I launch into a polemic on the absurdity of a political party which would even consider Kamala Harris as a legitimate candidate for the U.S. presidency, I would of course be derided as just another right wing jerk. But in spite of the recent efforts of both her party and its media whores to paint her in glowing terms, past assessments of her performance as Vice President published in such Left leaning papers as The N.Y. Times and Washington Post, illustrate the absolute hypocrisy of those efforts.

A week ago The Post published a piece by Megan McArdle who characterized the various intrusive solutions to inflation, housing costs, etc., proposed by Kamala, as “economically illiterate.” Dismissing Trump’s reference to them as communistic, she nevertheless said very little to disprove his point. The price controls promised by Kamala, McArdle said, inevitably lead to shortages which incite inflation. In a wonderful display of journalistic integrity, she admitted to being humiliated by the spectacle of many in the mainstream media lavishing Kamala with praise, while fully aware of the inanity of some of her policies.

On Aug. 17, Canada’s Globe and Mail, a paper no less Left-leaning than The Post, published an article by Konrad Yakabuski suggesting that during her Vice Presidency “the most damaging criticism of Ms. Harris came from fellow Democrats and those who had worked with her.” In her first 3 years in office, he informs us, 43 of her 47 personal staff members quit, citing her abusive treatment of those beneath her. In early 2023, obviously not seeing Harris as the probable Democratic candidate in the next election, The New York Times published a scathing critique of her performance as V.P., saying few Democrats had anything good to say about her. Perhaps most damning of all, in Oct. 2023, The Atlantic cited high ranking Democrats such as Biden’s chief of staff, Ron Klain, who found her performance as V.P. utterly unsatisfactory.

Kamala’s chief duty as V.P. was oversight of the “illegal” immigration problem at the southern border. Yet being of the opinion that the invasion of migrants unwilling to go through the proper legal channels should be decriminalized, she did virtually nothing to deal with the issue. Reminded by Lester Holt in an NBC interview that she had not even visited the border, she droned on at some length implying that was not true. Holt ended the interview, however, by reminding her that No, she had not yet visited that part of the country most disastrously effected by the migrant onslaught.

Just today, Aug. 26, The Blaze posted an article ridiculing a 30 second video released by Kamala’s campaign team announcing that she will continue to deal with the border issue as aggressively as she always has. Ironically, the video highlighted the Wall championed by Donald Trump which she repeatedly demonized when V.P. as a racially motivated abomination!

The Blaze is of course an online network of a “conservative” bent. Yet its Aug. 19 article by Auron Macintyre made many of the same points about Kamala as had been lodged by members of her own party. The reason Democrats chose her as Biden’s running mate, Auron insisted, was her Gender and Race, the superficial dictates of Identity Politics leaving millions of “progressives” unwilling to vote against one who is both Female and non-White. It is no doubt this, coupled with its Leftist bias, that has led the mainstream media to ignore the fact that Kamala’s “solutions” to America’s economic problems seem to entail doubling down on the very policies which exacerbated those problems over the course of Biden’s presidency.

As reported in an Aug. 17 article in Canada’s National Post, Felicia Wong, president of Roosevelt Forward, a Left-leaning think tank, celebrated the fact that under Kamala’s leadership “The days of ‘What’s good for free enterprise is good for America’ are over.” The writers of The Post article, of course, saw this as an admission that a Kamala presidency would entail a fundamental attack on Capitalism itself. Indeed her promise to ban “price gouging” in the food industry has been cited as an example of that initiative. Yet the fact is that 38 U.S. States already have legislation in place allowing them to step in should such “gouging” occur, and that in several Western countries price controls have already been established to help out in the fight against inflation. But while it may be unfair to criticize Kamala as fanatically anti-capitalistic simply on the basis of her proposed intrusions into the private sector, some of the benefits she has promised in an obvious attempt to win votes have convinced experts she has no understanding of economics whatsoever. Among those promised benefits, the automatic elimination of medical debt for millions of Americans as well as a $25,000 subsidy for first time home buyers everywhere! As cited in The National Post article I have before me, Daniel Hemel of the N.Y. University School of Law admitted that “America is on a fiscally unsustainable path” and that Kamala’s programs absolutely demand “more revenue.” Having more or less impugned the essence of her platform, he nevertheless recommends voting for her in the upcoming election. No doubt his disdain for Trump had something to do with this oddly irrational proposal.

But James Furman, President Obama’s top economist, was not willing to let political bias cloud his vision, stating that should Kamala’s fiscal policies be enforced: “You’ll end up with bigger shortages, less supply and ultimately risk higher prices and worse outcomes for consumers….”

My point is simply that the past has yielded an abundance of criticism of both the ideas and performance of Kamala Harris, much of it coming from those of her very own political perspective. Yet now that she is their candidate in the upcoming election, Democrats from Oprah to Barack to Hillary all adore her and the mainstream media is rife with glowing tributes. That her feelings on immigration literally entail the end of the Nation State, doesn’t seem to matter. That the Capitalism she so loathes is the very reason people from elsewhere are invading the nations of the West, doesn’t seem to matter. She’s a Woman of Color and she’s Not Donald Trump. All hail Kamala!
