On Monday, July 12, Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives fled en masse to Washington D.C. to break quorum and prevent the passage of a voting bill which the Republican dominated House would no doubt have approved. Lauded by various Democrats for the courage of their decision, Ted Cruz denounced it as an absurd “stunt” which was in fact a dereliction of their official responsibilities. This past Friday CNN’s Brianna Keilar roasted Cruz for various “stunts” from his political past but she never actually discussed the ethics of the incident in question. For Democrats, you see, the Will of the People is sacrosanct when they have the electoral upper hand, but little more than an target of derision when, as in the State of Texas, they do not. It’s literally a species of Fascism and it is disgusting.
Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott says he will have the derelict politicians arrested upon their return to his state. This will no doubt only exacerbate the gulf that separates the Left from the Right. But how does one bridge that gulf when one side sees itself utterly exempt from the Rule of Law? How does one reason with those whose fundamental tactic is to assail their opponents not with rational arguments tendered within the constructs of a functioning Democracy, but with childish, insulting epithets and seeming disdain for those very constructs?
As with the Republican voting bill in Georgia, the Texas piece of legislation focuses on the need for verifiable voter I.D. in the conduct of any election. Most Americans polled, including people of Color, agree. As I discussed in an earlier blog, a commission appointed by Democrat Jimmy Carter reported years ago that mail-in voting is ridiculously susceptible to fraud. A subsequent N.Y. Times article concurred. But things have changed, the absurd bigotry of low expectations, or perhaps a sheer lust for power, leading today’s Democrats, with the support of the hypocritical Times, to charge that Republican pieces of legislation limiting mail-in voting to those who truly need it and requiring valid I.D. from all voters is actually a conspiracy designed to deprive certain demographics likely to vote Democrat of their right to cast a ballot.
If you have been paying any attention you are no doubt aware that A.O.C. and friends have launched themselves into paroxysms of outrage at what they are describing as an attempt to reinstate the obscenities of the Jim Crowe era. Biden has ludicrously suggested Republican attempts at “voter suppression” to be the greatest threat to the U.S. since the Civil War. But I have read dozens of testimonials by Black Americans expressing outrage at the assumption that they are too backward, too stupid, to produce either the original or a copy of any one of the number of documents [drivers licenses, etc.] acceptable as verification of their identity. And is it not absurd that Biden should equate asking U.S. citizens to go to a polling station rather than a corner drop-box, to “voter suppression”?
The “For the People” act proposed by federal Democrats is typically autocratic in that it would override each State’s right to manage its own elections, as well as typically disingenuous in that its endorsement of universal mail-in voting subject to significantly slackened I.D. criteria would literally ensure wide-spread fraud in all future elections. But this is hardly surprising from a Party that has reduced the integrity of America’s National Borders and Institutions [i.e., the Supreme Court] to a mere joke, the Social Order of many of its cities to a mere memory, the concept of “majority rule” to a mere inconvenience, and indeed respect for the Rule of Law to a mere tool of the racist, “ruling elite.”
The Sun Times reported on June 6: Chicago’s Most Violent Weekend of 2021: 104 shot, 19 of them killed, 13 kids among the wounded. Here in Canada churches continue to be vandalized and statues defaced. Congratulations Joe and Justin. With your tacit approval your countries have been reduced to a state of near Anarchy. And you are so stupid as to think you are advancing the cause of “social justice.”
