As a federal election looms here in Canada, the Conservatives have been running a T.V. ad showing Justin Trudeau proudly declaring he is primarily interested in Canadian “families” rather than “monetary policy.”
The puerile implication is of course that “liberals” care about people while we heartless “conservatives” tend to go on about fiscal abstractions.
How terrifying is it that we have a Prime Minister apparently unaware of the inevitable connection between his monetary policies and the welfare of the average family. Canada’s deficit is out of control, the Liberals presently borrowing over 400 million dollars a day! Biden, according to Forbes Magazine, is intent on simply printing trillions of new dollars in an effort to counteract the cancer of inflation. Is he not aware that doing so is one of the chief causes of inflation? Is he unaware of the utter desolation wrought upon the people of Venezuela by the fiscal policies of their recent governments?
My research shows that the inflation rate in Venezuela in 2016 was 274%. This would mean that a loaf of bread which cost $3 in 2015 would be more than $10 the following year. By 2019, however, it is reported that Venezuelan inflation surpassed 9,000%! While I find this hard to believe, if it is only half true it would mean that that $3 loaf of bread would now be worth well over $100! But Trudeau says he isn’t interested in monetary policy and dopey Joe is sure that printing trillions of dollars in new currency will benefit every poor person in America.
Simple inarguable fact: Good intentions divorced from Reason are almost always destructive. Every socialist regime in history proves it. Even more persuasive, however, is the testimony of dozens of former “progressives” who, while still motivated by compassion for their fellow man, fled to the Right upon realizing the intolerance of any point of view rooted in raw emotion. The life journey of Dave Rubin comes to mind as well as the “conversion” of Canada’s Lindsay Shepherd who was viciously savaged by the Left because, as a college teaching assistant, she dared show a brief video of the politically incorrect Jordan Peterson.
The conventions of contemporary discourse consign the “conservatism” defended here to the political Right. I would argue, however, that it is distinctly of the Center, flanked on one side by those racists, sexists, etc. who see human biology as an absolute determinant, and on the other by those who naively insist that biology has nothing to do with what we become. The ability to ascend to that medial position beyond each of these demonstrably stupid world-views stems from our capacity for Reason without which we are in fact mere animals. Yet it is as mere animals that the Left defines us. Hence its support for the violence of Antifa and B.L.M.. Hence its reliance on the use of force when confronted with any rational criticism of its agenda. Hence its dismissal of sophisticated issues such as “monetary policy” as unworthy of the attention of any “caring” man.
