Using Canada’s response to environmental issues as typical of the Left in general, let me refer you to an April 29 article in the National Post by Sabrina Maddeaux. It pertains to the abandonment by a Scottish company, Sustainable Marine Energy, of a project to produce green energy using the tides of the Bay of Fundy, its decision due to the lack of cooperation of the government agency with which it has been dealing for the last 5 years.
Maddeaux states succinctly: “if we want to cut carbon emissions, we need viable alternatives.” The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, however, refused to give the project the go-ahead on the grounds that it might harm marine life. But company officials said they had been monitoring the impact of their technology on the Bay area since 2018 with no evidence of harm whatsoever, and that the DFO was utterly unable to substantiate its fears. Nova Scotia’s Premier, Tim Houston, called the situation “ridiculous,” saying: “The federal government is forcing a carbon tax on Nova Scotians, while at the same time blocking real solutions.” Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Officer has estimated that carbon taxes will cost all Maritime households well over a thousand dollars annually by the year 2030. Depending on those in charge elsewhere, these figures will vary from province to province, Conservative premiers being far less eager to increase the energy costs of people already beleaguered by inflated prices throughout the rest of the economy. Of course federally imposed carbon taxes transcend provincial jurisdiction. Yet our always compassionate Liberal Government has empowered the CRA [Canadian Revenue Agency] to rebate Canadian citizens in accordance with their level of income. That’s right! Having increased our living expenses out of its loathing for the Energy Sector, it is paying its vast bureaucracy millions of dollars to return money it need not have collected in the first place. This is what passes for common sense amongst “liberals” who are convinced it is their Ideology rather than the well-being of Canada’s citizens that ought to be their main priority.
Are you familiar with Eco Modernism? It is a term used to describe a vast array of science-oriented intellectuals convinced that our future on this planet relies on human ingenuity and technological innovation rather than a return to the past [i.e., a world riddled with wind mills and bicycles!]. But of course to the religious Left, Technology is a Western thing, a Patriarchal thing, a White thing. Absurdly, to suggest that Science utterly supersedes Superstition is now deemed an expression of Hatred [i.e., White Supremacism] rather than of simple common sense. Near the end of her article, Sabrina Maddeaux points out the fact that the “anti-development mindset and belief that taxes are the best way to solve problems” are ideological biases of no pragmatic value whatsoever. Of course she is right. What we are getting from the Left these days is almost entirely negative, relentless condemnations of everything it loathes with few positive solutions whatsoever.
Here in Canada, this entails subverting the oil industry, thereby putting thousands of people out of work in places like Alberta. It means spending millions of dollars to reconfigure our urban streets in an obvious attempt to reduce the mobility and freedom afforded by the automobile, thereby reducing the richness of life enjoyed by millions here in the Democratic West. It means taxing the latter relentlessly based on the notion that their “richness of life” is an unwarranted “privilege” born of a vile world-view. And yet those so disgusted with Capitalism and Western Technology adamantly insist we open our borders to the millions seeking to escape their chaotic homelands in order to reap the benefits of the very same! As I have said in other blogs, I don’t know whether today’s “liberals” are incredibly hypocritical or just plain dumb. How would you characterize Joe Biden’s decision in the first days of his presidency to cancel the drilling rights of several U.S. energy companies on various federally controlled lands, only to beg such environmentally irresponsible nations as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia to increase their oil production just a few weeks later? You tell me: Idiot or Hypocrite?
