When dealing with those devoid of both Reason and any respect for the Truth, meaningful discourse is impossible.
On Jan. 13 Democratic Senators used filibuster to derail a piece of legislation put forth by Republican Ted Cruz designed to deter the completion of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline bearing Russian natural gas into Germany. I don’t pretend to understand the geo-politcal complexities of the situation but Cruz claimed to be acting out of concern for America’s Ukrainian allies who see the pipeline as an aspect of the Russian military threat to their very sovereignty.
Just a couple of days earlier, on Tues. Jan 11, Biden had made a speech vilifying the filibuster, saying Republicans had “weaponized and abused” it to stifle his political agenda. It was but the latest in a series of statements suggesting that filibuster was somehow antithetical to the very Democratic process itself.
Biden had been a senator from 1973 to 2009. In a 2005 pronouncement which he characterized as “one of the most important speeches for historical purposes that I will have given in the 32 years since I have been in the Senate,” he lauded filibuster as an essential vehicle to democratic “compromise and moderation.”
So just as Time Magazine’s Molly Ball ludicrously suggested that a Republican victory in 2020 would have been somehow “undemocratic,” so Biden’s Democrats are perfectly comfortable in using the filibuster when it suits their purposes while denouncing it as an instrument of tyranny when employed by the opposition. Consumed by a sanctimonious sense of righteousness which they refuse to question, they have no respect whatsoever for the fundamental principles of governance!
They are either incredibly stupid or self-consciously hypocritical. Take your choice.
