On Oct. 9, America’s Blaze News Network reported on the sentences passed on Chris Barber and Tamara Lich, the chief organizers of Canada’s 2022 Freedom Convoy. While federal prosecutors had sought prison time for each of the accused, Judge Heather Perkins-McVey burdened them with but 1 year of house arrest coupled with 100 hours of community service. For them to spend time in prison, in addition to the 2 years in which their lives had been utterly disrupted, was, Perkins-McVey said, quite inappropriate.
The Freedom Convoy was launched as a protest against what was deemed an abuse of power by the Trudeau government, an abuse which deterred thousands of Canadians from continuing to earn a living because of the Covid threat. As one who contracted the disease only to recover within 24 hours, I fully understand the trucker protest. At the same time, given the information peddled by the mainstream Canadian media, I also see why many in this country saw the convoy as just another example of mindless, capitalist greed. The ultimate lesson of this entire scenario, however, is that Canada’s mainstream media simply cannot be trusted, indeed is so invested in its Leftist bias that it has now become utterly incapable of reporting the Truth.
Over and over again Canadians were regaled with reports of the horrors of the truckers’ invasion of Ottawa, our country’s capital. I, on the other hand, have watched multiple videos attesting to the peaceful, civilized nature of the protest. Judge Perkins-McVey in fact validated this view, saying that neither Barber or Lich warranted imprisonment inasmuch as the trucker convoy was not only peaceful, but actually accommodating. It was, in other words, a billion percent less “criminal” than the 2020 protests of Black Lives Matter which, while resulting in several deaths and 2 billion dollars in damages, were treated with relative tolerance by the hypocritical, Leftist, mainstream media. What is truly appalling is that this journalistic corruption, coupled with the lies of the Trudeau government, led millions of Canadians to conclude that the truckers were in fact no more than a collection of fascist, racist malcontents with no legitimate grievances whatsoever.
The concern for Chris Barber’s welfare expressed by a multitude of Canadians, suggests they did not see him as the criminal portrayed by the press. Upon receiving his relatively mild sentence, he thanked them for their support. And when asked if she regretted her participation in the convoy, Tamara Lich said on X: “I’ll serve 100 years in prison before I will ever apologize.” She unequivocally saw herself as a defender of the Democratic Rights of the Individual. While you may not agree, you must, if you are a rational individual, admit that the narrative propagated by the government sponsored CBC and others, was in fact a gross distortion of what happened in Ottawa in 2022, a distortion born of the Left’s arrogant, simplistic belief that anyone refusing to bow before its will, is a fascist monster!
I frankly believe that neither Lich or Barber ought to have been submitted to even 1 year of house arrest. The irrationality of their sentences, of course, becomes perfectly understandable when one considers that we live at a time in which violent, recidivist criminals are habitually released on bail due to the what the Left sees as its wonderful compassion for the least evolved among us. So dangerous criminals continue to walk our streets, while Barber and Lich have been denied 1 year of that right for disagreeing with the authoritarian policies of Trudeau’s “liberal” government. Truly a world turned upside down!
