Contemporary “progressives” believe in Social Engineering, the superficial notion that governments can significantly influence human behaviour through the imposition of certain restrictive policies. Gun control advocates, for example, are convinced that restricting the kind and number of guns available to the general public must inevitably reduce gun violence within any political domain. What they naively fail to consider, of course, is the moral diversity of the species, the fact that those with no respect for the law or indeed anyone but themselves, will always find a way to get their hands on their weapon of choice, while law abiding citizens, respecting their government’s edicts, will thereby find themselves utterly defenceless against such degenerates. Indifference to the issue of Moral Integrity is a hallmark of the contemporary Left. What more aptly makes that point than the canonization of career criminal George Floyd as a symbol of the “social justice” crusade of America’s Democrats?
Both Canada and the States are rife with anti-gun lobbyists determined to make the ownership of a handgun by law-abiding citizens as difficult as possible. Too complex on issue to fully illuminate here, let me use Canada’s Bill C-21 as an example of the trend to which I am referring. Passed by Trudeau’s Liberals in Oct. of 2022, C-21, while allowing those who already owned handguns to continue to do so, imposed a national freeze on the future sale of such weapons. Rifles designed for hunting appear to have been spared such cancellation while fully automatic firearms, understandably, have been banished altogether. But why the ban on the ownership of handguns by perfectly law-abiding citizens?
On June 22, Derek Sloan, leader of the Ontario Party, a fringe conservative group, posted an interview with Rod Giltaca, head of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights. One of the things that emerged from their conversation was the fact that while law abiding Canadian citizens are certainly entitled to defend themselves against criminal assaults, their use of firearms in doing so frequently leads to years of court appearances which devastate their lives. While they may ultimately be declared innocent of any crime, their treatment is an example of the lack of moral perspective of those who see Guns rather than People as the primary cause of ever increasing violence within many North American cities, cities which are generally plagued by “liberal” judicial protocols whereby repeat offenders are released on bail over and over again on the idiotically naive assumption that one who has offended 25 times is not likely to indulge in number 26.
Ontario Conservative Premier Doug Ford recently expressed outrage that while 9 individuals in the province’s Peel Region had been arrested for possessing 479 kilos of cocaine worth approximately 48 million dollars, 6 of them had been almost immediately released on bail. Granting freedom to drug dealers clearly impervious to the welfare of others is apparently allowed in the Leftist Ethos. But letting law abiding citizens own guns? Oh no, no, no!
It is midnight. One’s wife and 3 children are asleep. All of a sudden it becomes obvious that an intruder has invaded the premises. Dad, a legal gun owner, confronts him. Unaware of his intentions, he sees him reach into his pocket and, worried that he might in fact be armed, he opens fire. Perhaps he even kills him. But is he in any way responsible for what transpired? Is the disgusting surge in violent criminality here in the “progressive” West due to the ready availability of fire arms or the inane ethos of Entitlement championed by the Left, the Neo-Marxist notion that if you are not happy with your plight, you are obviously the victim of one form of “oppression” or another? We sadly live in an Amoral Age because the dominant political view of its “intellectuals” is that Morality is really just a specious concept of the “Privileged” Few who have no understanding whatsoever of the needs of the “Oppressed” Many. It is a degenerate vision of the species with predictably degenerate results!
