Repeated references by Donald Trump and others to the corrupt swamp underlying the sanctimonious public affectations of honesty and integrity adopted by most politicians, are generally dismissed as just so much misinformation. I am a “conservative” because I subscribe to its fundamental values, not because I naively deem “conservatives” to be above corruption. That includes, of course, Mr. Trump. But what is distressing about our pathologically biased contemporary culture, is the eagerness with which it attacks any hint of impropriety on the Right while turning a blind eye to the most outrageous of transgressions on the Left. The ludicrous justification of this double standard is the assumption by “progressives” that they are entitled to lie and cheat and generally ignore the Rule of Law because they are motivated by the best of intentions. Hence the following:
In July of 2022, Judicial Watch, a “conservative” advocacy group led by Tom Fitton, sued the city of New York for its failure to update its voter registration lists in the previous six years. Utterly ignoring the mandate of the National Voter Registration Act, this metropolis of approximately 5.5 million had removed only 22 names from its list of eligible voters over that period. Apparently only 22 people had either died or moved to new locales in 6 years! When ordered to submit to the dictates of federal law, the city removed 441,083 names from its list of eligible voters.
NYC has not had a Republican mayor for 10 years. The utter disdain for voter integrity exposed by Judicial Watch is therefore a product of the very Party that insists opposition efforts to curb the abuses naturally facilitated by mail-in voting are racially motivated. Yes, when Republicans try to reinforce the Rule of Law, they are apparently trying to undermine America’s Democracy. Yet when a Democratically ruled enclave such as NYC brazenly ignores its responsibilities regarding voter integrity, it barely gets mentioned in the mainstream media. What more perfectly conforms to what is generally implied by the term “swamp” than the self-satisfied indifference of N.Y.’s Democrats to fulfill the most basic of its legally mandated duties?
