More than 5300 police officers in NYC either retired or announced their intention to do so in 2020. This represents a 75% increase over 2019, an increase of course attributed to the widespread loathing for cops that seems to have become an integral aspect of Leftist ideology.
A spokesperson for the Philadelphia police force, admitting that it already has 268 vacancies which it has been unable to fill, suggests it will most likely be understaffed by several hundred for the foreseeable future.
Police in New Jersey say they are facing a “recruitment crisis” while Baltimore has admitted it is 300 to 400 men short of what it needs to conduct basic patrol duties!
Meanwhile L.A., the domain of Democratic Mayor Eric Garcetti, has proposed an increase of 50 million dollars to its police budget in response to the apparently skyrocketing violence in that city!
What better illustrates the utter naivete of the notion that Civilized Societies can maintain some semblance of Law and Order without the use of coercive force than the plight of those in and around George Floyd Square in Minneapolis, the symbolic epicenter of the De-Fund movement? So pervasive is crime in the area that business owners there, mostly Black, have launched a Go Fund Me page to help them stay afloat. As the police have been banned by B.L.M. from the site of Floyd’s death and are predictably not eager to go there, carjackings in that part of the city have nearly tripled while gunfire has become a staple of everyday life. “Progressives,” constantly celebrating their devotion to Empirical Reality while characterizing most “conservatives” as simple-minded religious fundamentalists, are in fact utterly incapable of accepting the demonstrable realities of Human Nature. Nothing better illustrates that failure of insight than their conviction that we can somehow co-exist in harmony without respect for either the Rule of Law or the efficacy of the Truth.
