In mid-September, France began experiencing protests from young people enraged by the quality of the education they were receiving from a nation which had apparently allowed many of its schools to lapse into a state of disfunction. Bizarrely, those protests quickly came to focus on other issues such as the cost of living, while also evolving into little more than riots. On Sat., Oct. 17, it is estimated from 550 to 800 thousand demonstrated across the country. On Sunday, French President Macron reported that at least 2,400 had been arrested in Paris, Lyon, Marseilles, etc., for engaging in acts of looting and violence. What is even more distressing, however, is that this chaos has come to infect other Western European nations such as Spain and Italy, for reasons which obviously have nothing to do with France’s Educational System!
On Oct. 26, Salem News posted a video of Larry O’Connor interviewing Nile Gardiner, the conservative Director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom. Videos of various riots were shown indicating the presence of Palestinian flags and banners of a radical leftist, pro-communist bias. Both men agreed that a significant percentage of the “demonstrators” appeared to be second and third generation migrants from non-European countries. They were of course indicting the European Union’s inclusive policy of allowing millions of Asians and Africans into its domain with no consideration whatsoever of their Political or Cultural Values. While Fox News has declared the revolutionary group Antifa to be intimately involved in the European protests, many in the mainstream media continue to report that they are basically no more than the machinations of a generation of discontented students.
Macron, who considers himself a Centrist, has blamed the chaos engulfing France on the “far left.” This is also the view proffered by many well respected “liberals” seeking to distance themselves from various atrocities committed by Leftists over the last few years. But the Mainstream Left, it seems to me, in its denunciation of most every aspect of Western Civilization, is implicitly revolutionary in its Ideology. If the Patriarchal, Capitalist, Colonialist, Racist, Environmentally Exploitative West is the Abomination which the Left never ceases ranting about, then perhaps Revolutionary Violence is the only answer.
My point is that what is happening in Europe is the predictable result of the narrative mindlessly endorsed by the Mainstream Left, the narrative which has come to dominate many of our institutions of higher learning. While certainly not condoning murder, many liberals hypocritically implied Charlie Kirk’s death to be utterly justifiable! While not overtly celebrating the criminal destruction of private property, most of the “progressive” media was decidedly tolerant of B.L.M’s destruction of over 2 billion dollars worth of such in 2020! While pretending to be supporters of the Principles of Democracy, the contemporary Left never ceases in its efforts to “cancel” those with whom it does not agree. What is happening in Europe is not a random accident of history, but the product of an Ideology that, while showing little respect for the boundaries of our Democracies, while being implicitly Socialist if not Neo-Marxist in its Authoritarianism, is nevertheless celebrated by Western “intellectuals” who fancy themselves the Champions of Democracy! Truly Insane!
