As cited on The Rubin Report, Bill Maher, who still deems himself a Liberal, recently denounced Inclusiveness, the very core value of contemporary “liberalism.” Refusing to align himself with the Republican Party, perhaps out of his loathing for Donald Trump, his common sense, it seems to me, ironically entails his support for the very values endorsed by contemporary Conservatism!
Immigrants to America, Maher suggests, don’t have to love everything about their new homeland. But they do have to support the basic Democratic Principles upon which the country was founded. Echoing the views of individuals such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali, he points out, for example, the loathing amongst many Islamic states for the very notion of Gay Rights! Indeed he mentions that both Turkey and Egypt recently turned away a Gay cruise ship which sought to enter their domains. The admission of millions of Muslims to both Western Europe and North America, he implies, clearly represents a threat to the very integrity of our liberal Democracies. And yet the Left continues to embrace open borders and a mindless indifference to the views and values of every person on the planet.
Values, both Moral and Intellectual, matter to Conservatives. So also, apparently, to Bill Maher! Having already admitted that the Left of yesteryear has undergone radical changes over the last few decades, perhaps at some point in the future he will come to admit that today’s Republicans, and indeed Conservatives throughout the rest of the world, are actually the true defenders of our Liberal Values!
