As reported by Townhall’s Matt Vespa on Oct. 12, San Francisco’s latest mayor, Daniel Lurie, in a recent interview on CNN with Dana Bash, admitted his city’s decline into borderline chaos to be the result of its tolerant approach to issues such as homelessness, drug addiction, property theft, etc., all of which have led to the exodus of a multitude of businesses to destinations still focused on The Rule of Law.
Openly admitting the absurd naivete of Leftist politics, he said: “We lost our way as a city. We were focused on the wrong things and today we’re focused on common sense.” Further granting the irrelevance of so-called progressivism, he stated: ” I mean, we got so entrapped in our progressive values ….. that we weren’t taking stock of what was happening in our streets.”
The terms Left and Right are deceiving, inasmuch as mainstream conservatism is of the Rational Center. San Francisco’s Democratic mayor is certainly not the only Left leaning individual to acknowledge the often horrific results of Leftist “compassion.” Canada’s B.C. government decriminalized the use of certain hard drugs for 3 years before realizing that its liberal tolerance was woefully destructive. Commentator Bill Maher is forever mocking the absurdity of what he calls “the radical Left.” But he is being disingenuous in that the policies he derides are generally very much of the Mainstream Left. His refusal to come out as a conservative, it would seem, is rooted in his disdain for Donald Trump whom he mocks relentlessly. Trump’s belligerent manner of pursuing his goals is, I believe, the main reason for the continuing radical divide between America’s Left and Right. As indicated by the admissions of San Francisco’s mayor, common sense may in fact ultimately prevail. While some have predicted the inevitability of another civil war in the States, perhaps the election of a Republican President of the demeanor of Ronald Reagan in 2028, will re-establish that country’s commitment to the Rational Standards of Post-Enlightenment Humanism [i.e., Conservatism]. One can only hope!
