On April 21, The Free Press published a piece entitled: “Is Donald Trump Breaking the Law? Seven Experts Weigh In.” While this newsletter, founded by Bari Weiss, would seem to be decidedly conservative in its perspective, its article cited 4 judicial experts who are clearly not sympathetic to Donald Trump and the Republicans. Its motivation, in other words, was not the validation of its political bias, but an honest assessment of the Truth!
The focus of the article was the slew of executive orders issued by Donald Trump through his first 90 days in office, orders which in many cases seemed to entail an arrogant disregard for the authority of the nation’s judicial institutions. Law Professor Michael W. McConnell declares Trump’s hostility towards the courts to be a threat to the very basis of America’s Democracy. Lawyer Ed Whelan, who admits to supporting many of Trump’s policies, nevertheless agrees with McConnell, insisting that the judiciary ought not to become a mere tool of the party in power. Indeed this is the consensus opinion of all seven of those cited in the Free Press article, even the three of an apparently conservative perspective. Ironically, however, another truth emerges from the article which impugns the notion that Trump alone is guilty of violating the principles upon which his country was founded. It is a truth which would seem to explain why he in fact feels entitled to denounce his adversaries as hypocrites guilty of the very disdain for the Rule of Law of which they are accusing him!
Over the last 3 months the Supreme Court as well as various regional courts have sought to stifle or at the very least stall Trump’s efforts to send a good many of America’s illegal aliens back to their countries of origin. The key word here, of course, is “illegal.” Is it not absurd that under Biden over ten million foreigners were allowed to enter the U. S. without submitting themselves to the proper immigration protocols? Was the legal system under the former president not only tolerating but actually encouraging illegal activity? Were the Democrats not committing the very sins of which they are now accusing Trump?
While I do not see the contemporary president’s belligerent demeanour as in any way productive, it can be argued that his various initiatives represent an attempt to restore America’s Democracy rather than destroy it. His anger, that is to say, becomes somewhat understandable when one considers he has inherited a regime in which 200 lb. individuals with penises have been allowed to compete in Women’s sports because of the inane sentimentality of the “progressive” Left.
My point is that the denunciation of Trump as a latter day Hitler is grossly simplistic. At the same time the claim that his suspension of aid to various foreign countries could cause thousands to starve to death in the near future, is truly troubling. It is such complexities that can only be illuminated through the sort of free and open debate frequently “cancelled” by the political Left. It is such discourse, one hopes, that may inspire or indeed force Trump to qualify some of his less than rational political initiatives. To support everything he says and does out of a sense of loyalty, is not my idea of Rational Conservatism!
