A few weeks ago on his Rumble Podcast, Dinesh D’Souza discussed with Robert Spenser of Jihad Watch the absurdity of the many occasions on which Leftist ideologues have slammed Conservatives for their “Islamophobic” criticisms of mainstream Islam. One must point out, of course, that there are no doubt millions of sane, decent Muslims who loathe the authoritarian intolerance of their native governments. But this does not alter the fact that their religion is inherently oppressive in ways which are utterly incompatible with what used to be Western Liberalism. Ironically, as D’Souza and Spenser point out, the one quality shared by both the contemporary Left and mainstream Islam is their tendency towards ideological intolerance. Moreover is not the Left’s tendency to defend Islam against Western criticism a betrayal of its very own values? Indeed is it not obvious that if Liberalism means standing up for the personal freedoms of the Individual, it is today’s Conservatives who are in fact the true Liberals!
