The Trump Dilemma

Batya Ungar-Sargon is an American journalist who, while claiming to be a Leftist, recently defended her support of Donald Trump on CNN. The “No Kings” protest suggesting Trump had dictatorial ambitions was, she said, ridiculous. He had made his agenda perfectly clear to the American public which subsequently elected him. His Right to pursue that agenda was therefore Democratic to its very core. Ungar-Sargon made the same point in an interview with Bill Maher who, like the panel at CNN, was also appalled that she could support Donald Trump. Yet given Maher’s attacks on the various absurd aspects of the Woke Left, one is led to ask what other option the American public had but to vote for Mr. Trump.

Republican Rand Paul believes in fiscal responsibility, in the devastating economic impact of the gross over-spending pursued by Biden through his years in office. While Trump shares that rational viewpoint, his proposed budget cuts are inadequate according to Paul, who was the lone Republican to vote with the Democrats in shutting down the American government. When accused of being a traitor to his fellow Republicans, Paul pointed out that he had vigorously defended Trump against the Democrats’ efforts to weaponize the U.S. legal system in their attempt to destroy him. Clearly he is guided by his conscience rather than an inflexible sense of loyalty to his own party. It is Reason and Integrity rather than such loyalty that ought to guide both Democrats and Republicans in dealing with the often questionable tactics of many engaged in the contemporary political debate, including, of course, Mr. Trump.

While Trump has every right to reduce government spending, he obviously needs to be circumspect in slashing programs whose devastation might very well result in the loss of human lives. His proposed cuts to Medicaid represent such a threat to impoverished Americans while the slashing of various foreign aid programs might apparently result in the starvation of thousands. The massive deficit confronting Trump is clearly the result of the mindless overspending of the “compassionate” Left, yet he must be both rational and compassionate in pursuing his fiscal goals. Unfortunately, he is not particularly blessed with either of these qualities!

Am I suggesting he is guilty of all the heinous impulses attributed to him by the Left? Of course not! Blacks who have worked with him insist he is not a Racist. While he has certainly had some inappropriate relationships with Females, his respect for the opposite sex is manifest, his appointment of the amazing Karoline Leavitt as his Press Secretary being but one example of that fact. And as for his apparently Fascist tendencies, his sometimes questionable uses of the judiciary to silence his critics are obviously in response to abominations such as the Steele Dossier farce whereby the FBI under Biden sought to destroy him in an unabashedly biased abuse of its authority. Such violations on the Left, of course, are hardly surprising given its mindless devotion to “cancel culture,” its fascistic tendency to label any opinion with which it does not agree as “hate speech.”

The Truth I am attempting to illuminate is the complexity of the contemporary political scene. Trump’s support for Israel in the Middle East as well as Venezuela’s democratic insurgents, is clearly worthy of respect. So also are his views on the Mexican border, DEI fanaticism, urban crime, the Trans agenda, etc., etc.. But at the same time he frequently pursues his goals with a sort of mindless aggression which, if shared by those with whom he is negotiating, would reduce their relationship to little more than a state of warfare. His recent dealings with Canada, perhaps America’s greatest ally, aptly illustrate the bullying tactics to which he is prone.

Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford recently launched a TV ad featuring Ronald Reagan celebrating Tariff-Free Trade among Nations as a mutually beneficial arrangement. Ford was clearly attacking Trump’s policy of imposing punitive tariffs upon America’s trading partners in his attempt to improve his country’s economy. While it appears that Ford edited Reagan’s statement to make his point, it is also true that the former president did in fact believe in Free Trade. Yet Trump responded by both declaring Ford to be a brazen liar and by terminating trade negotiations with Canada. It is obvious, of course, that those negotiations will continue at some point in the future. Trump’s reaction was more or less that of a petulant 12 year old! Indeed his habit of threatening other countries with massive tariff increases in order to force them to submit to his demands, is a violation of the very concept of Respectful, Civilized Discourse.

Coincidentally, the right-leaning Free Press today [Oct. 28] published an online piece suggesting many of its mindset were now committing the same sort of anti-free-speech sins of which they have been accusing the Left for years. Like Rand Paul, this political site is clearly committed to exposing the Truth rather than slavishly supporting the behaviour of all those who share its perspective. Unfortunately the President is both Intellectually and Psychologically prone to reducing the complexities of Reality to Black and White terms. Hence his ridiculous tendency to see all of America’s trading partners as enemies rather than rationally attempting to forge with them agreements which are mutually beneficial. Hence his heartless cancellation of foreign aid programs which might lead to thousands of deaths! While some have absurdly declared Trump to be the greatest president ever, those of simple common sense realize he is deeply flawed. Yet were I an American forced to choose between Trump and Biden tomorrow, I would unequivocally vote for Trump. Such is the absurdity of the contemporary Left!
