On Oct. 11, Canada’s National Post published an extensive article by Michael Higgins entitled: “The silent slaughter.” Subtitled: “The West Shrugs As Christians Are Persecuted Worldwide,” the piece highlights both the horrific treatment of Christians in various countries in Asia and Africa, as well as the muted response of the mainstream Western press to this abomination.
Beginning with the revelation that approximately 62,000 Christians have been murdered in Nigeria since the start of the century, Higgins refutes the notion that this might be a grossly exaggerated claim by citing Bill Maher’s September comments wherein he both acknowledged the genocide under way in Nigeria as well as the Western media’s relative indifference to the issue. Maher is no Christian and continues to identify with the Left, but felt he could not ignore these obvious truths.
Open Doors Canada is a Christian advocacy group which recently published its list of the most heinous anti-Christian regimes on the planet. Ironically, Nigeria is ranked seventh on this list. First is North Korea where it is illegal to be a Christian and approximately 60,000 of the latter are presently in prisons or various labour camps! Second comes Somalia where Al-Shabab, a violent Islamic group, is intent on eradicating all Christians from its domain. In similarly motivated Pakistan, where blasphemy is punishable by death, 25% of those so charged are Christians, even though they constitute but 2% of the population. In China it is Communism rather than Islam that is the motivating force behind the oppression of its 97 million Christians who are forbidden to espouse any idea or policy not consistent with those of their totalitarian government. Higgin’s article cites other Asian and African examples of this vile trend. But why, one must ask, has the Western press been so muted in its response to these facts? The answer, to any informed conservative, is ridiculously obvious!
I admire Bill Maher for his willingness to critique the various absurdities of the contemporary Left. But what he cannot seem to admit to himself is that these absurdities stem naturally from the fundamental absurdity of its Ideology. Given its embrace of the ridiculously simplistic Marxist notion that the Successful throughout History have always been so due to their impulse to Oppress, the Left sees Colonialism not as an inevitable aspect of the West’s technological achievements and intellectual curiosity, but as a mere expression of Racial Arrogance; sees the Enlightenment’s embrace of Reason not as an essential vehicle to our understanding of Reality, but as a mere Western Idiosyncrasy; indeed sees Christianity as no more evolved that Islam, though anyone with an IQ of 10 or more might refute that notion with a multitude of Facts.
As we are an imperfect species, it would be absurd to suggest that the members of any Identity group have not been guilty of all sorts of abominations throughout history. This is of course true of those groups relentlessly targeted by the Left: i.e. Whites [who oppress people of colour], Males [who oppress Women], Heterosexuals [who oppress Gays], Capitalists [who oppress the poor], Christians, [who oppress all non-Christians], etc., etc. ad nauseam. But to Stereotype all members of these groups as Vile and to more or less tolerate criminal attacks upon them because of their Identity, is utterly disgusting. And yet that is precisely why the Left-leaning, mainstream press has been relatively silent about the persecution of Christians throughout the non-Christian world.
Here in Canada, approximately 100 Christian Churches have been torched by Indigenous malcontents and their supporters over the last few years. It is a validated fact that 33 have been burnt to the ground since 2021. Yet while the mainstream media never stops sanctimoniously exploiting the simplistic narrative that Canada’s relationship with its Indigenous was “genocidal” from the very beginning and that its Residential Schools were of no redeeming value, it rarely mentions this outbreak of brazenly criminal attacks on Christian institutions. As 95% of my Boomer friends are lifelong “liberals” who rely on the mainstream press for their information, most of them were utterly unaware of the facts cited in Higgins’ article! As the Left’s Political Correctness is implicit with the notion that Western Civilization and the Religion that once informed it are rife with arrogance and intolerance, criminal assaults on Christians are apparently of no great concern to the self-appointed mentors of our culture. Morality be damned! Black Lives Matter had a right to inflict over 2 billion dollars in damages on Main Street America. Canada’s Indigenous have every right to burn down Christian Churches. And Nigeria’s slaughter of over 60,000 Christians is perfectly understandable!
While no sane person would give his assent to the above statements, the brazenly irrational sentiment informing the contemporary Left leads it to more or less ignore heinous crimes committed against those it designates as Oppressors, while waxing apoplectic over such trivialities as the refusal of a Straight Person to use the pronouns of choice of a Transgender. Such is the absurdity of our contemporary world!
