I understand that Trump’s recent assault on Venezuela, were it to have been launched on just about any other nation on the planet, might justifiably be reviled as an ignorant, arrogant violation of international law. But inasmuch as Nicolas Maduro was an intolerant dictator who had seized power by force, it might legitimately be argued that Trump’s action was in fact a victory for Democracy and the right’s of Venezuela’s oppressed millions!
As reported by Not the Bee on Dec. 5, multiple Democrats, including Kamala Harris, Zohran Mamdani, Chuck Schumer, etc., have denounced Trump’s seizure of Maduro as an abomination. Yet it is a fact that Joe Biden, less than a year ago, had offered a 25 million dollar reward for his capture!
In the last couple of days, multiple Venezuelan ex-patriots have celebrated Maduro’s downfall, praising Trump for his courage and deriding the many Democrats who have chosen to seize the issue as just another example of his dictatorial nature. Schumer is appalled that Trump did not seek congressional approval of his venture, even though such approval would most likely have imperiled its success by alerting Maduro of the impending attack! As seems to be the case with most everything Donald Trump says and does, he flagrantly disregards the norms of conventional political procedure and discourse, while nevertheless pursuing goals perfectly in line with the values of Western Democracy! While I am not disputing the fact that his disregard for protocol may at some point prove disastrous, it has at this point done no such thing. Dispatching the National Guard to D.C. has significantly reduced crime there, while removing Maduro from power is clearly seen by millions of Venezuelans as an incomparable gift. I am certainly not of the opinion that, as some Republicans have said, he may be the greatest President ever. But at the same time he does not seem to warrant the never-ending spasms of hatred vomited by the Contemporary Left!
