On Jan. 14, the Salem News network posted a video of Black conservative Larry Elder discussing the bizarre fact that while America’s Democrats are presently denouncing Donald Trump as a racist monster for dispatching ICE agents to various U.S. cities in order to rid them of their illegal aliens, multiple revered Democrats in the past expressed the very same concerns as Mr. Trump with the repercussions of widespread, unmonitored immigration.
By the way, I mention Mr. Elder’s color not because it is of any relevance to me, but because were he White, his views on immigration would be denounced by the Left as just another example of ignorant White Supremacism!
Barack Obama, we are told in the Salem podcast, deported multitudes of illegal immigrants, stating frankly that the very way in which they had entered the U.S. indicated they had no respect for the Rule of Law. Criticized by some Democrats when he was President, he nevertheless sought to establish rational protocols which would enable a thorough appraisal of all those seeking to enter the States. Unlike Mr. Trump, Elder notes, he was never called a Nazi or a Fascist!
In 1995 Bill Clinton admitted that most Americans were seriously concerned with the large number of “illegals” entering the country, citing both the burden their presence was placing on taxpayers as well as the jobs they were taking which would otherwise go to U.S. citizens.
In 2008 Nancy Pelosi declared passionately that America must secure its borders. In 2009 Democrat Chuck Schumer stated categorically that illegal aliens do Not have the same rights as legal citizens.
Mr. Elder cited other Democrats who had also made statements on immigration which are perfectly in line with Trump’s agenda. What, he is implicitly asking, has changed in the Democratic Party over the last decade or so?
Mr. Obama maintained that it was simple common sense for the U.S. to take charge of its borders. Has the Democratic Party abandoned common sense in favor of “Wokeness”? Is it in fact irrational in many of its policies?
Of course the Trump factor always intrudes on such issues. Is the contemporary Left tolerating attacks on ICE agents in various cities simply because it hates Donald Trump? Has it in fact placed its desire to defeat the Republicans in the next election ahead of the welfare of law abiding American citizens?
I realize Trump’s aggressive manner of pursuing his agenda makes him easy to dislike. But have today’s Democrats abandoned the very principles they used to celebrate simply out of spite?
