In British Columbia’s recent provincial election, a Conservative was voted Premier for the first time since 1928! Like California, B.C. has been a bastion of Woke, Leftist Ideology for years. Yet Lorne Doerkson has just been granted a massive majority to implement policies which are utterly inconsistent with the values of the “progressive” Left. In a recent Global News interview he discussed the need to improve the province’s economy by, among other things, allowing the building of pipelines and granting the right of oil tankers to operate in waters long denied to them by Environmentalists and Indigenous activists. It was, Doerkson said, insane that tankers of foreign nations were able to operate off B.C.’s coast, while Canadian ships were banned for fear that one of them might devastate the environment by sinking!
Too complicated an issue to exhaust here, the Global Warming narrative, as I have said repeatedly, is hypothetical and the planet’s temperature has been fluctuating radically throughout all of history, while our supply of Fossil Fuels will be exhausted well before the end of this Century. Reason suggests we need to cultivate those fuels discreetly as we explore new ways to satisfy our energy needs. This is simple common sense. It is such common sense which seems to have led B.C.’s voters to dispatch their Leftist NDP Government in favor of the Conservative Mr. Doerkson. It is the same common sense celebrated by San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie who, as I pointed out in a recent blog, maintains his city had lost its way in pursuing its Leftist agenda rather than focusing on the facts of Reality. Since taking office in Jan. of 2025, he has sought to ensure the safety of law abiding citizens, while clamping down on the widespread public abuse of drugs as well as the epidemic of petty crime seemingly tolerated by his woke predecessors. Car break-ins, he says, have declined by 90% under his leadership. Uncomfortable with the notion that he has become a conservative, he insists he is still a Democrat who is simply making sensible decisions.
Republicans, we are told, are likely to be decimated in America’s upcoming midterm elections. But it is Trump’s personal failings rather than the policies pursued by his party that will lead to this outcome. Millions, for reasons which I understand, simply hate the man. Yet the trend implied by recent developments in B.C. and San Francisco, both of which have long been bastions of “wokeness,” suggests Common Sense [i.e., Rational Conservatism] may ultimately save the West from the suicidal agenda it has been pursuing over the last few decades!
