Wow! Such hypocrisy!
In the U.S. Senate this past Wednesday, Republican Tom Cotton gave an impassioned speech denouncing Biden’s proposed changes to Senate protocol, changes clearly designed to bypass the checks and balances presently impeding the imposition of policies which Biden says are essential to the welfare of the American public.
Remember, it is Trump, we have been told incessantly, who represents the chief contemporary threat to America’s Democracy. The rules governing filibuster used by Republicans to prevent the passage of various pieces of legislation are apparently typical of their authoritarian bent. But after his defense of those very rules, Cotton reveals his speech to have been a verbatim replication of a speech given by Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in 2017!
When the checks and balances devised by the designers of the American Constitution to assure energetic debate of the various policies endorsed by any given administration do not serve their purposes, Democrats have no problem with pressing for their elimination. But when those checks and balances allow them to impede the imposition of policies inconsistent with their agenda, they defend them as the very lynch pins of the Democratic process. Such is the disdain for fundamental Principles typical of the contemporary Left, a disdain perfectly highlighted by Cotton’s use of Schumer’s very own words to denounce procedural changes which Schumer now hypocritically says he fully supports!
